The Art of Cannabis Cooking
Making edibles at home gives you complete control over dosing, ingredients, and flavors. Whether you are making classic brownies or gourmet infused dinners, the process starts with one crucial step: decarboxylation.
Step 1: Decarboxylation
Raw cannabis contains THCA, which is not psychoactive. Heating it converts THCA to THC through a process called decarboxylation. Preheat your oven to 240°F (115°C). Break cannabis into small pieces and spread on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring halfway through. The cannabis should turn golden brown and smell fragrant.
Step 2: Making Cannabutter
Cannabutter is the foundation of most cannabis recipes. Melt 1 cup of butter in a saucepan on low heat. Add 1 cup of water and your decarboxylated cannabis (7-10 grams for moderate potency). Simmer on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. Never let it boil. Strain through cheesecloth into a container. Refrigerate until the butter solidifies on top of the water. Remove the butter and discard the water.
Step 3: Calculating Dosage
This is the most important part of making edibles safely. If your cannabis is 20% THC, 1 gram contains approximately 200mg THC. For a batch of 20 brownies using 7 grams, that is roughly 1400mg total or 70mg per brownie. Adjust your recipe to achieve your desired dose per serving. For beginners, aim for 5-10mg per serving.
Easy Recipes to Start
Cannabis Brownies Use your cannabutter in any standard brownie recipe, replacing regular butter 1:1. Box mixes work perfectly for beginners.
Infused Olive Oil Follow the same process as cannabutter but use olive oil instead. Great for savory dishes, salad dressings, and pasta.
Cannabis Gummies Combine fruit juice, gelatin, and cannabis tincture for homemade gummies with precise dosing.
Safety Tips
Always label your edibles clearly and store them away from children and pets. Start with a low dose and wait at least 2 hours before consuming more. Keep track of your dosing calculations. Never drive or operate machinery after consuming edibles.
